On March 14, 2022, Prof. Anna Fox, was invited to give a lecture entitled ‘Inside Out at Home and Abroad— Photographic Storytelling". Prof. Anna Fox is a professor of photography at University for Creative Arts in Farnham.
Anna Fox started with her own experience to describe how she used the camera to narrate all various of life as a photographer. She showed the photo series she took from the late 1980s to the present to introduce the ideas of creation behind the pictures.
Work Stations,1987-1988
WORK STATIONS series was the beginning of Anna Fox’s fame. In the 1980s, British society was in a state of changing, and new form of employees and offices appeared at the same time. Anna Fox vividly recorded all kinds of daily work in different offices with her camera. In this series, she criticized the nature of fierce social competition at that time.

This photo series recorded a British war game called ‘Paintball’. The flash gave the picture a strong visual shock, which could be associated with the real war scenes. This series is Anna’s question about the strange expression of Consumerism: why do we celebrate war in this way?

In 1991, Anna moved back to the countryside in Southern England. She recorded the villages where her ancesters lived, with a focus on the daily lives of rural children and women. With her camera,she examined the values which she grew up with. At the same time, she criticized female conservatism in the village.

In 1999, Anna moved back the countryside again. Back to the village series focuses on various rural activities in the village at that time, such as Halloween. It truly recorded people's special costumes during festivals, which were very fantastic and surreal. Rural life with cozy huts, beautiful gardens and so on were depicted in the postcards. Anna tried to break the stereotype of country life.

Zwarte Piet,1999
Zwarte Piet portraits presented the Dutch Christmas tradition. People painted their faces into Moorish black, implying the history of Spain's occupation of the lowlands of Southeastern Scotland. Anna avoided using traditional narrative methods and adopted the skills of portrait to encourage the participation of the audience and participants.

Anna Fox is one of the representatives of the British new color documentary photography in the 1980s. Her works have strong color shock. The large frame photography combined with the lighting effect of the film scene makes the picture quite dramatic. She is good at using ironic image techniques to explore the narrative camera language, showing the combination of illusory and realistic charm of photographic chronicles from inside out.
At the end of the lecture, Anna Fox had further communicated with the tutors and students.
